Hemp Seeds are exceptionally nutritious & rich in healthy fats, protein & various minerals. Containing over 30% fat & all 9 essential fatty acids, they are exceptionally rich in two in particular, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, (omega-3). They have about a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, which is considered in the optimal range.
Around 25% of their total calories are from high quality protein, so they are a great source of protein for those avoiding animal products. By comparison, Chia Seeds & Flax Seeds have levels of around 15-18%. In fact, by weight, Hemp Seeds contain similar levels of protein to beef! They are also considered a complete protein source, meaning they provide all the essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are not produced in the body & need to be gotten from the diet. Such complete protein sources are rare in the plant kingdom as plants often lack the amino acid lysine. Another example of a complete, plant-based protein source would be Quinoa.
Hemp Seeds are also a great source of arginine & gamma-linolenic acid, both of which have been linked with a reduced risk of heart disease. Whole seeds contain high amounts of both soluble & insoluble fibre which benefits digestive health. By comparison, hulled hemp seeds have had their fibre-rich shell removed so contain very little fibre. Because of this, we only use whole seeds.
Finally, although hemp & marijuana are members of the same species, Cannabis sativa, they are completely different plants. There are around a dozen varieties of hemp plants grown for food & all of them contain about 0.001 percent Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, so you won't be failing any drugs tests because of these little beauties! Add to muesli, salads, snack on them in fruit & nut mixes, use in salad dressings or even baking.
For a great smoothie, add 2 tsp (8g) of Hemp Seeds to a blender with a banana & 200ml almond milk (or your favourite alternative) & blend well. Add berries too for an extra boost.
If just used like this, the pot contains around 7 servings, so it's great value.
Volume: 56g resealable pot. Shelf life 12-18 months. There's no need to refrigerate, though they will last longer refrigerated than in the cupboard.
